The terms “Coach” and “Mentor” are often used interchangeably, but in reality, they are actually two different roles!
What is a mentor?
“Mentoring is when someone with seniority offers informal advice to someone with less experience,”. The relationship between a mentor and a mentee is often a longer term relationship, where the mentee can ask questions as they advance in their own roles.
What is a coach?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”. This relationship is often shorter than a traditional mentoring relationship because a coaching relationship is more goal-oriented rather than development driven
It is my belief that mentoring is vital for everyone, especially those individuals looking for career growth within their business or organization. However, I consider myself a coach because it is my goal to provide my knowledge and resources that will not only allow you to build your personal goals and achieve them, but continue growing professionally and eventually move on from my coaching services.
Now the big question: What do I consider myself (coach or mentor)?
Now that you know the difference between a coach and a mentor, don’t be afraid to reach out to me if you have any questions and I would be happy to help find what would work best for you!
